Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is an economic immigration program jointly operated by the Alberta provincial government and the Canadian federal immigration authority. Its primary aim is to stimulate Alberta’s economic development by attracting and retaining Canadian immigrants who are ready to join the workforce. Applicants nominated by the province of Alberta, along with their spouses and children, are eligible to apply for permanent residency in Canada through the federal government. The Alberta employer-sponsored immigration program has relatively low eligibility criteria, and one individual’s application can lead to the entire family immigrating to Canada.
On June 14, 2018, the Alberta Opportunity Stream replaced the previous Employer-Driven Stream and Strategic Recruitment Stream. Under this new stream, applicants can rely on their own qualifications to apply, without the need for employer support. This category is suitable for applicants who are currently employed full-time in eligible occupations in Alberta and meet minimum requirements for residence, work status, occupation, language proficiency, education, and work experience.
Alberta’s Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) currently includes the following streams:

- Rural Renewal Stream
- Farm Stream
- Rural Entrepreneur Stream
The Alberta employer-sponsored Teer 4 and Tier 5 low-skilled worker immigration programs have lower thresholds, less stringent requirements, and high activity levels. An individual’s application can lead to the entire family immigrating to Canada. Successful applicants nominated by Alberta, along with their spouses and children, can apply for Canadian permanent residency.
Alberta Employer-Sponsored Program Requirements:
- High school education equivalent to Canadian standards (if not a Canadian graduate, educational credentials must be assessed).
- English language proficiency at CLB 4, equivalent to IELTS scores of 4.5 (listening), 4.0 (speaking), 3.5 (reading), and 4.0 (writing)
- No specific age limit.
- Work experience: a. A minimum of 24 months of full-time, relevant work experience in the past 30 months in any region or country, with a job offer from an Alberta employer. b. Alternatively, at least 12 months of full-time work experience in Alberta in the past 18 months in a related occupation.
- Applicants and family members must be in good health and have no criminal records.
